It is a state-accredited private university located near Bonn, Germany.

On the home page of its website it states: "The educational concept of Alanus University focuses on the person as a whole. We thus embrace the humanistic ideals of Schiller and Humboldt while also following Rudolf Steiner’s anthroposophical idea of “educating the whole human being”. This education of the whole human being is developed through interdisciplinary programs and in particular though the general studies program (Studium Generale) which is participated in by students from all faculties. The general studies program integrates philosophical, artistic and social explorations and "includes the opportunity to examine, analyse and deconstruct the teachings of Rudolf Steiner in a contemporary and discourse-focused way".

In terms of the threefold social order, the economic and cultural spheres are the focus of this university. In the degree courses Social Entrepreneurship and Business Administration (Shaping a Sustainable Economy) Steiner's ideas on economics gain a voice in relation to progressive approaches to harmonising and renewing economic life. In the other degree programs - from Curative Education, to Eurythmy Therapy, to Fine Arts and Architecture, to Waldorf (Steiner) Education - Steiner's indications regarding the cultural-spiritual spheres of society are presented in a contemporary light.
